You should appropriate comparisons, contrasts, draw analogies of what is in the novel and one’s own experience. Other first edition points for books by John Steinbeck include: The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice And Men, The Pearl, Sweet Thursday, East of Eden, The Wayward Bus, Cannery Row, The Moon is Down, The Winter of Our Discontent, The Short Reign of Pippin IV, The Long Valley.Henry James wrote that the novel is to be experienced-therefore the reader must completely understand what happens in it. Another difference is that the Grosset & Dunlap boards have red lettering rather than blue. Also keep in mind that the copyright page on the Grosset & Dunlap reprint looks similar to that of the first edition, but it does not list The Van Rees Press on the bottom. Notice the reference to Of Mice and Men, which was published in 1937. This is a reprint of Tortilla Flat published by Grosset & Dunlap a few years after the Covici Friede first edition.
